Character Information

Character Name: WPC Sharon “Shaz” Granger
Canon: Ashes to Ashes
Canon Point: Pre-S2
Character Journal: [personal profile] braveasalion

Appearance:

Shaz is 5'5 and of a slim build. She has dark, chin length hair and brown eyes. When she isn't in her work clothes she is inclined to be quite creative in what she wears, being heavily influenced the New Romantics scene of the early 1980s. This is toned down in her everyday wear, though still evident, but when she visits clubs she is more than happy to go overboard in whatever way is possible as was encouraged by the Blitz club at that time.

Age: 24
History:

Both links contain SPOILERS for the end of the series. Due to the nature of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes I would recommend not reading them if you have any intention of watching it.

Personality:

Shaz is a friendly sort of person, which is something that usually comes across right off the bat. She's eager to please and can often come across as a pushover, particularly in the first series. Inspired by Alex Drake, Shaz tries to become more involved with the police, no longer happy to be perceived as just a glorified typist by those around her. However, Shaz is a very different woman to Alex, and though she looks up to her, she doesn't believe she can ever be like her and that isn't really what she's aiming for.

Although she doesn't always believe in herself, Shaz is very political minded and has strong beliefs in causes that she won't be swayed from. She'll stand up for her beliefs no matter what anyone around her says, being quite passionate and angry about people who side with things she believes are morally wrong. She's left wing and firmly backs the Labour Party despite the lack of support the public gave them in the early 1980s. She's pro-women's rights, pro-animal rights and believes in fair and equal treatment for all. She's anti-war and shows a lot of contempt when her colleagues show support for the Falklands war, pointing out that they Argentinians have a conscription army and most of their soldiers are probably just untrained kids.

She also seems to love and be very close to her family. She talks about her mum frequently, and her dad also comes up a fair bit. According to Alex having kids is high on Shaz's list of priorities, and from the way she talks about her family this is likely to be right. Although she's moved out she still visits her mum a lot and recalls fondly her dad reading to her and her siblings as a child. It's likely her interest in politics was sparked by her dad, who she says is a union man. She seems to have gained a lot of knowledge about political groups from him, such as being able to tell CID right off about the RWF (Revolutionary Workers Front), whereas Chris and Ray had to put a lot of research to even get what it stands for.

Shaz likes to have fun, and once she's come out of her shell she often pokes fun at the other members of CID, or makes comments that catch the others off guard. On one occasion Alex is dressing up as a prostitute to go undercover. Of course the rest of CID have a laugh at her expense. Shaz is quick to chip in, claiming that she'd pay, backing Alex up and getting in a comment to shock the others at the same time. She appears to be one of the few police officers who has an active social life outside of work. She's involved with the New Romantics scene, frequenting clubs such as the Blitz and clearly enjoying the fashion of the era. She's also mentioned having friends with similar interests who she sounds as though she's close to. She enjoys being a police officer, but unlike some of the others it's far from the only important thing in her life.
